Haitian Music at St. James

As you’ll see in other parts of this website, St. James has a strong partnership with the Episcopal parish of Bonne Nouvelle in Bigonet, Haiti — a friendship strengthened by mutual love of music.

St. James organist, Liz Athorn, visited Bonne Nouvelle in June of 2012, along with several others from our parish and brought back tapes of Haitian hymns from Bonne Nouvelle services. Liz transcribed and translated pieces for our choir, and eventually our congregation, to learn. We sing these hymns several times a year.

We’re also thankful for the opportunity to increase our repertoire of Haitian hymns when we have visitors from Bigonet in our midst. Our adult choir learned a new song during Bonne Nouvelle’s most recent trip to Minnesota which, together, we sang as the Offertory anthem that Sunday.
